Week 40   Day 3

The words

            give and

are used frequently in the Gospels

God gave his Son

            who gives us eternal life
Jesus gave his life for us

            no one took it from him.

Jesus prayed the Father

            to give us the Holy Spirit to help us

Through the grace of God we receive the gifts of

            becoming children of God

            a calling

            a community of believers

            a testimony to share with others

The giving goes on and on and on

            as we learn to be

            gracious givers too.

John describes three aspects of belief

            believe in Jesus and receive eternal life

            love God and do his commands

            love and serve one another.

                                     LIVE IN CHRIST

    Jesus invites us to live in spiritual union with him.

                                    John 14, 15 & 16

    1"Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe

also in Me.  2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it

were not so, I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place

for you.  3Then I will come again and receive you to Myself;

that where I am, there you may be also.

    5Thomas said, "Lord, we do not know where You are going;

how can we know the way?"  6Jesus said to him, "I am the

way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except

through Me.  He who has seen Me has seen the Father.

    15"If you love Me, keep My commandments.  16 I will pray
the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He
abide with you forever--17the Spirit of truth, whom the
cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows
But you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be
in you.
18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

    19"A little while longer and the world will see Me no more,

but you will see Me.  Because I live, you will live also.  23 If

anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will

love him.  We will come and make Our home with him.

    1"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

2Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;

and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear

more fruit.  4Abide in Me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot

bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you,

unless you abide in Me.

    11"These things I have spoken to you that My joy may be

in you, and that your joy may be full.  12Love one another

as I have loved you.  13Greater love has no one than this,

than to lay down one's life for his friends.  15No longer

do I call you servants, but I call you friends, for all things

that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.

    5"Now I go away to Him who sent me.  7Nevertheless,

I tell you the truth.  It is to your advantage that I go away;

for if I do not go away the Helper will not come to you;

but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

    32"The hour has come that you will be scattered, each

to his own, and will leave Me alone.  Yet I am not alone,

because the Father is with Me.  33 In Me you may have

peace.  In the world you will have tribulation; but be of

good cheer, I have overcome the world."
