Week 47   Day 5

Thessolonica was in Macedonia

which we know today as Greece

This is one of the early churches

            on the European continent

When Paul visited there

            he and his message

were met with a lot of opposition

            from the local people

so much so that he was forced to depart

and leave this new church behind

            in that uncertain environment

Paul was very concerned for them

            could a new little church

            of Gentile christians

            survive in a hostile setting?

Here was a church born in persecution

Paul uses these phrases

            a work of faith

            a labor of love

a hope that does not die

and he reminds them about God

            the faithful One.

                                  LONGING TO SEE YOU

The fear of bad news was replaced by the joy of good news.

                                 I Thessalonians 1, 2 & 3

1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the

Thessalonians:  Grace to you and peace.  2We give thanks
God always for you, making mention of you in our prayers,

3remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of

love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.  5Our

gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power

and in the Holy Spirit.

6Having received the word in much affliction, with joy of

the Holy Spirit, 7you became examples to all in Macedonia

and Achaia who believe.  8From you the word of the Lord

has sounded forth in every place.  Your faith toward God has

gone out, 9and how you turned to God from idols.

7We were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother

cherishes her children.  8We were well pleased to impart to

you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because

you had become dear to us.  11We exhorted, comforted, and

charged every one of you, as a father does, 12that you walk

worthy of God who calls you into His kingdom and glory.

17Having been away from you for a short time, we

endeavored more eagerly to see your face.  18We wanted to

come to you--time and again--but Satan hindered us.  19For

what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing?  Is it not even

you in the presence of Jesus at His coming?

1When we could no longer endure it, 2we sent Timothy to

establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, 3that

no one should be shaken by these afflictions.  4We told you

when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation,

just as it happened.  5For this reason, I sent to know your

faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and

our labor might be in vain.

6Now that Timothy has come to us, and brought us good

news of your faith and love, and that you greatly desire to

see us, as we also to see you--7therefore, in all our affliction

and distress we were comforted concerning you.  8Now we
live, if you stand fast in the Lord.

9What thanks can we render for all the joy with which we

rejoice for your sake, 10night and day praying that we may

see your face?  11May our God make you abound in love to

one another and to all, and establish your hearts blameless

in holiness before our God at the coming of our Lord.
