Week 13   Day 5

How low can you go!

        defeated in battle

        questions--Why?  How could this happen?

        the last resort

                 bring in the ark

                 the visible symbol

                 of God's presence and covenant

        another battle

        another very great slaughter

        the ark was captured

                and taken by the enemy

the only two sons of the priest were killed

        priest Eli

their judge and leader for 40 years

                died without warning.

When bad news strikes

        some view the bad news

        as the totality of life

        and are overwhelmed

Others view bad news

        as a bad day--

one day in a much larger

              scheme of things

         they know

         there will be other days

                               better days.

                                                THE ARK
Captured by the enemy and then returned.
                                          I Samuel 4, 5 & 6

1Israel went out to battle against the Philistines, and
beside Ebenezer.  2The Philistines put themselves
in battle
array, and Israel was defeated.   The Philistines killed
about four
thousand men.  3When the people had come into the
camp, the
elders of Israel said, "Why has the Lord defeated us
today before
the Philistines?  Let us bring the ark of the covenant
of the Lord
from Shiloh, when it comes among us it may save us
from the
hand of our enemies."

5When the ark of the covenant came into the camp, all Israel

shouted so loudly that the earth shook.  6When the Philistines

heard the noise, they said, "What does this great shout in the

camp of the Hebrews mean?"  7So the Philistines were afraid,

for they said, "God has come into the camp!"  And they said,

"Woe to us!  For such a thing has never happened before.''

10So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated.  There

was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand

foot soldiers.  11The ark of God was captured; and the two sons

of Eli died.  12Then a man of Benjamin ran from the battle line

and came to Shiloh.  18When he made mention of the ark of
Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and
his neck
was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy.
had judged Israel forty years.

2The Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the

house of Dagon.  3When the people arose in the morning, there

was Dagon, fallen on its face before the ark.  7When the men

saw how it was, they said, "The ark must not remain with us, for

His hand is harsh. Let the ark be carried away to Gath."  9After

they had carried it away, the Lord was against that city.  10So

they sent the ark to Ekron.  The Ekronites cried out, 11"Send

away the ark of the God of Israel, let it go back to its own place."

For there was deadly destruction throughout all the city.

10The men did so; they took two milk cows and hitched them

to the cart.  11They set the ark on the cart.  13The people of

Beth Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest; and lifted their

eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.  14They split the

wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the

Lord.  21They sent messengers, saying, "The Philistines have

brought back the ark; come down."  1They brought it into the

house of Abinadab on the hill, and consecrated Eleazar his son

to keep the ark of the Lord; 2it was there twenty years.
